Domestic Pattern
Duo Show with Elizabeth Rankin
Factory 49 Gallery, Marrickville
August 2019
In the exhibition Domestic Pattern, Elizabeth Rankin and Sarah Eddowes explore a variety of pattern and colour through diverse materials. They address pattern as an organisation of the visual as well as a predictable behavioural practice in the domestic space. Their work recognises the pleasures of private life but also the darkness that can exist therein.
Rankin’s practice is drawing; both still and moving. Her creative research methodology uses archival material and media resources. Whilst her work is not exclusively site specific each installation of work is adapted to its site essentially redrawing the body of work. Domestic Patterns encodes the rhythms of the domestic sphere in assemblages and in animation. It is an aspect of her current doctoral project into domestic crime.
Sarah Eddowes’ practice harnesses the nature of materials such as silicone and wax to explore the pattern created by iterative actions such as slicing, extrusion and compression. The restriction of an organised, repetitive process reveals organic and geometric forms that provoke a sense of wonder.
